Debate Club
The NHS Debate Club is a student-run club started in 2011. Approximately every two weeks, the club meets for 90 minutes after school to debate a controversial and relevant issue of local, national, or global significance. The club's expressed purpose is twofold: to provide a supervised forum for the expression of views on issues that matter most to high school students and to encourage the development of valuable skills, including argumentation and public speaking, among students at all grade levels. Prerequisites include a passion for ideas and their expression, an eagerness to test one's own views against those of others, and an uncompromising belief in free speech as a means to a better society.
All NHS students are invited to participate, either as debaters or as judges, as long as they agree to our most basic rule: that all participants and points of view must be respected. Routine attendance is encouraged but not required; the club recognizes that students have a variety of commitments and may not be able to attend as often as they would like. Even occasional attendance benefits everyone involved. To join us, keep an eye out for NHS Debate Club posters and bulletin announcements, sign on to a debate team at Room 314, contact Elana the directors on Facebook, or just show up to watch!
